Monkeys, vampires, and funny memories… Celebrating our loved ones on International Joke Day

At LifeWeb 360, we’re fortunate to see every day how meaningful it is to create a lasting memorial through shared memories.

Especially those memories that bring back feelings of joy and laughter - you know, their favorite (and repeated at every single family holiday) joke, hilarious stories of adventure or getting into trouble as kids, or just remembering what their laugh was like.

In the spirit of International Joke Day, we’re sharing a few LifeWeb memories from our community that celebrate the fun side of their loved ones.

“…The obvious next step was to recreate the scenes of Twilight in the town centre.”

In Winter 2012, while I was working in the UK, Yang flew out to spend the holiday break traveling around Europe with another friend and me. One of our stops was in the town of Montepulciano. After arriving, we learned that the town centre had been a filming location for the Twilight movie, New Moon. Upon learning this, the obvious next step was to recreate the scenes of Twilight in the town centre.

I don't think we had really any idea which scenes we were trying to recreate, but it didn't matter because we were having so much fun. We, in fact, had so much fun, that we accidentally stayed for one extra night and ended up missing our overnight train to Prague, where we planned to ring in the New Year.

Only knowing each other for a little over six months, this was one of the biggest challenges we had faced as friends. I remember how Yang remained calm and focused, helped come up with a plan to get us to Prague in time, and could laugh at how silly the whole situation was. I admittedly don't react the greatest to surprises, but Yang made it easy to roll with the punches.

One long cab ride, one train ride to Milan, and one expensive flight later, we arrived in Prague in time to celebrate New Year's Eve together.

“The miraculous thing about the event was that the monkey that George pointed at seemed to understand and obey him.”

We were on a Safari and were lucky enough that our group ended up being just us 3 and our guide. His last words to us were, ‘DO NOT FEED THE MONKEYS.’

George and I were seated in seats on either side of the jeep and Syl was in the back. The top of the jeep was open. Syl said, ‘Von, look at this monkey how cute his little hands are,’ as I stood up to see Syl dropped a piece of apple and before you knew it there were monkeys every where. They jumped into the jeep and grabbed our cardboard lunch boxes. Now George was very calm and sitting in his seat. While I was in a small panic not knowing what to do. I hear the guide yelling, ‘Get a stick!’ Then I look up and there is a monkey looking down on us from the open roof of the jeep.

George lifts his finger up to the monkey and sternly yells, ‘NO!!NO!!’ Then I jumped out of the jeep grabbed a stick and started hitting the side of the jeep. There was one monkey on the floorboard that I had to poke with the stick to get him out. The miraculous thing about the event was that the monkey that George pointed at seemed to understand and obey him.

Every time I tell this story or think about it , it brings a smile to my face and a laughter deep inside me. We had a few funny stories on that trip. George liked to joke around.”
