Types of Celebration of Life Events

You’ve decided to host a
celebration of life—now what?

The first step to planning a Celebration of Life is to decide what type of event is right for you, your loved one, and their community.

Celebration of Life events come in all shapes and sizes. There is no “one way” to host one. We’ve gathered together some popular event ideas to inspire you and to help you decide what event would be perfect for celebrating your person.

As you look through the list, think about what type of “feel” you’re hoping the event will have, your budget, group size, and who is coming—the more the merrier or a specific subset of your person’s community, like work colleagues or close family.

Finally, consider using a free digital tool like LifeWeb 360 to capture the memories shared at your in-person celebration, keep the memory sharing going after your live event, and to keep the community that loves your person connected long-term.

Traditional Celebrations

Religious, Spiritual, or Cultural Service

A lot of people assume the term “Celebration of Life" is used when one wants to avoid religious affiliations and follow their own rites; however, religion, spirituality, and one’s cultural beliefs/traditions are all important factors that make up your person and those attending. These memorials are about celebrating the life of a loved one, while also supporting those who mourn their loss. If incorporating the groups shared beliefs in the event achieves those two goals, then you’ll have a successful celebration.

Candlelight vigils often include a moment of silent reflection and a slate of speakers who may lead prayers or share stories of the deceased. This event is a great way to remember the life of a loved one, while also reflecting on their passing on a large scale.
